Junk Drawer

stock_cutlerydrawer.jpg

Let’s admit it - we’ve all got at least one, sometimes we have one in every room- so let’s stop feeling guilty about it and figure out what we want to do with it. Should we allow ourself one junk drawer, for that collection of thumbtacks, doorknobs, and extra coffee pot cords that are orphans in our otherwise immaculate homes? I think one junk drawer is a reasonable request, but if your junk drawer has begun to multiply into many, or it’s just grown out of control and the drawer doesn’t close so well anymore - it’s time to get serious and have a junk drawer make-over.

The easiest thing to do is to empty the drawer out completely. Have a seat at the kitchen table, put a nice clean trash can right next to your chair, pour yourself a cup of coffee have a seat and get comfortable. Next, take everything out of the drawer and place it on the table.

Begin grouping like items such as rubber-bands in one group, nails in another, old business cards in a third and so on. You may need to make more generalized piles such as “adhesives” and put tape, glues, thumbtacks all into that pile. When you come across something you know for certain is broken or no longer needed toss it immediately - and be fairly harsh with your judgement of things - you’re never getting that old watch fixed - it’s been in the drawer for three years at least, and that flashlight that’s missing a bulb - toss them!

If you find items that you don’t know what they are (and you will . . .) put them into a pile and ask each member of your family if they know what the items are and if they are needed. This way you can either put them in a place where they can be used, or you can feel free to throw them out.

Once you have gone through everything and sorted it all out you have a couple of choices - can some of the stuff be put in a more logical place? Put office supply items such as rubber-bands, paperclips, and tape into your desk drawers where they belong. Screwdrivers and nails might go in a toolbox or in baby food jars in the garage.

After you put away all the “misplaced” items that you can, you’ve probably thinned down your “junk” pile quite a bit. One solution to your junk drawer would be to purchase a plastic tray that would fit into the drawer with compartments to organize your items - those are helpful for keeping items sorted so that you can find what you’re looking for. Another way to do that is to use plastic tubs, small jars, or baskets that you already have around your house that you can re-purpose to organize the items in the drawer as well. Once that is in place - have fun putting everything that’s left on the table neatly back into the drawer.

When you’re finished, open and close the drawer several times, marvelling at how easy the drawer slides in and out - it feels so LIGHT! And be proud of yourself for making your junk drawer into a UTILITY drawer!
